Laser Beams Invoke New State of Matter In Superconducting Niobium-Tin

Ames Laboratory and Iowa State University have created a new state of matter via blasting Niobium-Tin superconductors with a laser beam at terahertz speed. Pulsing this material trillions of times per seconds somehow switches on a hidden state of matter by adjusting quantum interactions at atomic/sub-atomic level. The results were confirmed via ultrafast spectroscopy

Superconductors are ordinary elemental compounds cooled to temperatures close to absolute zero where they begin to conduct electricity without resistance – making them ideal for powerful electromagnets and other advanced technologies. What makes this exotic state of matter particularly unique is it’s apparent lack of instability and ability to manifest without heating.

 

Most other alternate states matter decay back to normal conditions after some time however this particular state of matter is what call scientists refer to as “metastable”.. It remains in the alternate state for one of order of magnitude longer then most other strange forms of matter making it potentially useful for solving the current problems with over-sensitivity in quantum computing.

 

“Here, the quantum quench (change) is so fast, the system is trapped in a strange ‘plateau’ and doesn’t know how to go back,” Wang said. “With this fast-quench, yet non-thermal system, there’s no normal place to go.”

 

The system still requires some fine tuning before they can know for sure whether or not it’ll be useful in quantum computers however it certainly a step in the right direction as far as stabilizing conditions for mainstream commercialization of this advanced technology.
